‘Nan’ is the portrait of a resident hen at Ross Farm Museum. The cold winter day that we visited the Museum she was sheltering in the barn in a beam of warming sunlight with her companion Byron. This painting, along with ‘Byron’, ended up taking on the air of a formal portrait that might have been contemporary to the early days of the farm. The final product put me in mind of the well known painting ‘American Gothic’ which dates from the 1930’s. With a little research I learned that the sombre couple portrayed in that painting were inspired by two real people – Nan Wood Graham and Byron McKeeby.
